Back in the day, I had the good fortune to meet Lynn Michell online. She’s an author and editor, as well as the owner of independent publishing house Linen Press. Although we write in different genres we found we had much in common when it comes to the creative process. We talked, we swapped stories, and we realised that the way we were chatting – unfiltered, questioning – doesn’t happen that much in the open.
We thought we might have something worth saying, drawing on our combined experience, which could be of interest to other writers and readers.

Fast forward a week or three and The Truth about Fiction podcast was born. Initially it was mainly us with an occasional guest but the format (in the loosest sense of the word!) gave us scope to talk to writers and thinkers off the beaten track.
You can find us on Spotify and Apple, and we’d love to hear what you think.
We’ve chatted about the hard graft of writing, getting published, making compromises, the dark art of marketing, AI, motivation, and navigating the publishing industry. Our guests have brought along a range of topics around well-being for creatives, why stoicism may be good for writers, and sharing insights into their genres.
Our wish list of future guests includes: a UK literary agent (preferably not the one who took nine months to get back to me!), a writing competition judge, a comedy novelist, and a professional book marketer. If any of those are you, please get in touch!
